how can i make sure in a marketing internship, that i am getting a good feel for the creative aspect of marketing?
I know there are the traditional logistical tasks for marketing, but I would love to be able to persuade, influence, and be creative in this career field. What sort of tasks and responsibilities should I look for in a marketing position to ensure that there is that aspect of creativity?
Hey Sara - it sounds like you want to work on projects that let you see them from brainstorm to start to finish, instead of just the "implement" part of the plan.
My advice is to look for internships at smaller companies - as an intern with a smaller company you'll have more influence over the type of work you want to do. Smaller companies also may not yet be set in the ways they do their marketing and will be more open to implementing new ideas. Look for internships that are going to allow you to create or manage content, like writing blog posts or managing social media pages. Even research projects give you the opportunity to show your style. If you're already at an internship, do some research on what you want do, and present it with confidence on how you want to take action.
This is definitely a good topic to bring up during your interviews to see how receptive the employer is, just make sure not to sound like you want to take over the place :)

Some of that probably depends on what type of marketing concentration you'd like to explore. Can you give me a little more information?
Haha yeah, that's the trick ... sounds a lot like what my sister says. I actually think my coworker Synthia can answer your question better because she's done several marketing internships. Let me see if I can get her to reply.
